In 5 years you'll basically have an All-Ireland Team cause you keep stealing our players!!!
On a more serious note - Sport is indeed a great uniting force and we have seen this in Northern Ireland throughout the European Qualifiers. David Healy arguably did more to bring the country together than certain politicians. But sport and politics must be kept separate. This is not to say we can abandon the call to find common ground. Both of our respective national teams have been around for a long time (the IFA being established long before the FAI) and have respective histories of success, failure and emotions. To merge the teams would be a bad idea. It's not a sectarian thing - it's merely that each of our respective populations have great pride in our National sides. What's wrong with a little regional identity in sport? I think it's healthy for the game. Up until now we've been a little isolated from each other, and haven't played in a long time. But this is why they've now set up the Celtic Cup involving ourselves, Scotland and Wales. Surely this isn't a bad first step? Then - a multi-purpose National Stadium? I'd say George was having a few when he suggested that. I think we could however merge the football leagues into one. There would have to be a lot of ground work in breaking down barriers but it would be a start? Comment (1)
